History of the Christus Statue

The original Christus statue (by sculptor Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen or Thorwaldsen, 1770-1844) was made of plaster in 1823 and was used to create the 11-foot marble version in 1839 that stands in the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Danish sculptor spent nearly 40 years in Rome and attained fame as one of the greatest contemporary artists in sculpture. He sculpted a sepulchral monument for Pope Pious VII in St. Peter's Cathedral and numerous other statues, while at the same time working on his masterpiece of Christ and the 12 Apostles. His Christus statue is on display in Copenhagen Cathedral, and it is remarkable for not showing a suffering Christ.

LDS Church members are familiar with the carrara marble replica of the 1823 original located in the North Visitors Center at Temple Square, Salt Lake City. It was a gift of Stephen L Richards, First Counselor to President David O. McKay (1951-1959). In 1966 this heroic-size (11 feet, 1 inch) Christus was placed in the North Visitors Center on

Temple Square in Salt Lake City. The LDS-owned replica Christus stands in a peaceful rotunda before a mural of the universe to emphasize LDS Church members' love of the Savior and Redeemer of the world.

A second Christus was commissioned for display in the Church's pavilion at the New York World's Fair (1964-1965) and was sculpted by Aldo Rebachi of Florence, Italy. This statue was later placed in the Visitors Center on the grounds of the Los Angeles Temple. Additional Christus statues are currently located at visitors centers adjacent to temples in New Zealand, Hawaii, Mexico City, Washington DC, and Mesa, Arizona.
